7 Best Green Tea Matcha Desserts in Sydney You Must Try

Best green tea desserts in SydneyOver 10 years ago in my hometown of Sydney, I became obsessed with green tea or matcha. That’s right. Before the green tea tsunami hit the world and instead of yellow fever, we all caught green fever, I had discovered this superfood (before superfoods were a thing). The first instance was in tea – a steaming pot of green tea. Slowly, the same cute cafe (sadly, no longer around) introduced green tea soft serve- my first ever green tea matcha dessert. Oh my gosh, the marriage between the slightly bitter green tea with the cooling creaminess of the soft serve was perfect! And it quenched my thirst! Who needs H2O when you have green tea soft serve?

Since then, matcha craze has exploded and I’ve always been in search of unique green tea dishes. Having grown up in Sydney, there are plenty of matcha desserts that I have tried over the years. But, I’m going to reveal my top 7 personal favourite matcha desserts in Sydney (it really depends on my mood). Some I’ve had countless times and others, I fell in love with on first bite (yes, it was love at first bite)! I’ve included a variety of types of matcha desserts and not just a variation of a matcha cake. I feel there needs to be a variety of desserts to be an all rounded matcha dessert connoisseur!

So when you’re in Sydney, check these places out for your matcha fix! I’m drooling writing this post already!

No. 7: Green Tea Matcha and White Chocolate Fondue

Top view Green tea matcha fondue at Cafe OratnekCafe Oratnek is stuffed with Japanese-inspired desserts. The green tea matcha lamington and the green tea matcha and white chocolate brownie are two other desserts I have tried here. However, I didn’t personally love them as much as the green tea matcha and white chocolate fondue and the other dessert on this list (keep reading).

When I saw this on the menu, I had to order it – what a genius idea! One of my dreams is to have a green tea matcha hot chocolate that isn’t too sweet so this came in close. The green tea matcha dessert came beautifully presented on a platter with strawberries, bananas, roll up mochi, marshmallows and cubes of sponge cake and the cup of green tea matcha and white chocolate fondue.

I suggest you share with a few people because it is actually a lot especially after eating brunch. They actually brought out 4 forks even though I was with ONE friend, which made me wonder whether I was supposed to share with the next table. Whatever, I’m feeding my food babies.

Green tea matcha fondue at Cafe OratnekThe matcha and white chocolate fondue had a good hit of matcha in it but it was a bit on the sweet side by itself. However, once you dip some of the items in, it balanced it out and was very addictive. The rolled up mochi was my personal favourite as it is usually flavourless and balanced out the sweetness of the fondue. The dripping fondue was thick enough to coat each item and talk about professionalism-that cup of fondue was just enough for the fruits and yummy items on the platter.

Give this a try when you’re with a few friends or share it with one friend if you love the matcha and white chocolate combination in liquid form!

No. 6: Green Tea Matcha Croissant

Top Impressions green tea matcha croissant taro croissant green tea red bean bun and pain au choc

I love croissants but only amazing croissants (I am biased towards delicious foods). So when I found out there was a green tea matcha croissant at Top Impressions Bakery in Wolli Creek, I had to make the trek. And then when I entered the store, I had to impulse buy. Hence, the extra 3 buns up top (taro croissant, green tea and red bean bun and double pain au chocolat).

You would think that they just added a sliver of green tea filling (one of my complaints about most pain au chocolats is the minuscule amount of chocolate filling) but one bite into this bad boy and you were hit with the lava of green tea filling. It was bursting at the seams with matcha. I turned it upside down to try and figure out how they inserted the fillings inside. The conclusion is, it’s magic. Seriously!

The pastry was a bit soggy and not the best that I have ever had (although it holds its shape) but I think it went well with the green tea matcha filling. The richness of the pastry melded well with the bittersweet green tea matcha filling. I would definitely eat this again for my green tea matcha hit!

No. 5: Green Tea Matcha Tiramisu

Cafe Oratnek Green tea matcha Tiramisu Top View

This is the second green tea matcha dessert from Cafe Oratnek that I really liked- the green tea matcha tiramisu! I love traditional tiramisu and I love matcha so this was a no-brainer. This tiramisu is very light with a touch of green tea matcha although from the pictures, it looks like it’s six layers of green tea matcha heaven. The green tea matcha mascarpone is fluffy and creamy, sandwiched between sponge cake soaked in green tea matcha, and then dusted off with matcha powder again.

It’s sort of like eating a hamburger for me – although you know it’ll taste best if you eat one whole bite, you can’t exactly fit it into your mouth so you sacrifice one layer. For me that layer was the layer with no green tea matcha (the bottom one) and it still tasted divine!

No. 4: Green Tea Matcha Lava French Toast

Green Tea Matcha French toast at Meet MicaMeet Mica, another Japanese-fusion cafe in Surry Hills, is most famous for their green tea matcha lava French toast. I’ve also had Cafe Oratnek’s green tea matcha French toast and this one tastes the best.

I love the presentation of this dish – a rectangular piece of toast is cut out of a thick slice of French toast and filled with green tea matcha sauce served with seasonal fruit and condensed milk. It feels like a gift presented by the cafe and to open it I have to cut it up. To enjoy it, I have to eat it. And I did.

The thing I like about this dish is that there is a strong noticeable hit of matcha on the toast and in the sauce. By itself, it is slightly bitter but it allows you to adjust the sweetness with the condensed milk on the side. I know there are heaps of posts out there where people pour their condensed milk on top and take pretty pictures but I like to dip my toast into the condensed milk on the side (you know me, I don’t like it sickeningly sweet). It makes it easier for sharing if everyone can adjust to their liking. I’m not sure if the strawberry powder added much to this dish and the seasonal fruit was nice but I treated it more like the dessert after the dessert.

I would definitely order this again when I go to Meet Mica to enjoy this joyous gift!

No. 3: Green Tea Matcha Fruits Garden

This medley of yummy goodness can be found at Matcha-Ya. They only recently opened and I already love this dessert. It’s a medley of fruits, dango (sort of like mochi), green tea sponge cake, topped with an upside down green tea matcha soft serve. The reason I love this soft serve better than the other green tea matcha soft serves is that it is both aromatic and creamy. The other ones were a bit on the watery side. This is just so lickable and refreshing at the same time.

I sort of base my soft serve on the traditional McDonald’s soft serve minus the pig fat. This one is a lot more sophisticated than that. And just so you’re wondering, if you don’t want your daily serving of fruit a day, you can get the green tea matcha soft serve by itself. The last time I went, they were offering free soft serve between lunch hours so go get your matcha fix!

No. 2: Green Tea Matcha Chiffon Cake with Red Bean Cream

Matcha chiffon cake with red bean creamNow we’re onto the top two. At number two, this glorious matcha green tea chiffon cake by Cafe Cre Asion is so good. I have made green tea chiffon cake and it hasn’t been like this ever. I will work harder to get there though.

It tastes divine – you can taste the combination of roasted tea and green tea inside the moist pillow of cake. The roasted flavour gives it a bigger kick and turns it into a very fragrant dessert. The sweetness level is just perfect to me. The red bean cream isn’t too sweet with visible red beans interspersed amongst whipped cream. I’m not sure it was completely necessary to be honest. I happily demolished the cake by itself anyway. This green tea matcha chiffon cake is even better than the ones I had at the old cafe I used to go to. It has even surpassed the heightened taste of nostalgia. Now, that’s saying something.

No. 1:  Green Tea Matcha Tart

Green tea matcha tartAnd we are at my number one green tea matcha dessert you got to try! This is my all time favourite green tea matcha dessert! I know you think this is so vanilla because it is so simple but it’s full of green tea matcha. Whenever I visit Cafe Cre Asion, I end up ordering this dessert and something else. This one wins. Always.

I love how unassuming it is but when you take your first bite, the big hit of green tea matcha really soothes my cravings. It’s the kind of dessert where you can tell that it’s green tea matcha, not coated in sweeteners or overshadowed by other flavours. One of the simplest and most satisfying green tea matcha desserts to me – high quality strong green tea matcha with a smooth and silky texture that melts on your tongue bite after bite. I can’t stop drooling!
